Marched out from Bougainville about 9pm and arrived at Boveiles about midnight after a force march.
Up to 7:00pm the time was spent in preparations and conferences regarding the impending attack. At 7:15pm orders were given to Companies and Details to fall in, including No.2 Company which arrived during the afternoon, The Battalion marched about 6 kilometers and embussed at 10:00pm. The weather was unsettling.
During the morning move it was particularly noticed that congestion of traffic was general. Artillery, infantry, tanks and ammunition columns, which at that time were understood to have been the case for the past two nights. Evidently enemy reconnaissance had noticed this, as during the move enemy shelling of our rear areas was very heavy. At 2.00pm August 5th, advanced parties left the Battalion to reconnoiter positions into which the Battalion would move on the night of August 5th/6th. This move being completed at 12 midnight. During the move enemy harassing fire was very heavy, resulting in the following 18 killed and 8 other ranks wounded. Casualties occurring when a shell struck a small ammunition dump on the side of the track on which Nos 1 and 2 Platoons were moving.
